Makin’Moves Vinyl Sampler Vol. 1
DJ Qness feat Xoli M – ‘Don’t Go’ (Quentin Harris Remixes)
SMI featuring Shea Soul – ‘Just Fine’ (Jihad Muhammad & David Harness Mxs)

MAKINEP001

Summer 2012 saw the birth of a brand new events promotion company in London, ‘Makin’ Moves’. With already a host of successful parties under their belt, head honcho Matt Langrish-Smith and wing-man Jamesey make the next move and launch their exciting new record label.

‘Makin’ Moves Sampler Vol 1′ features 2 wonderful soulful outings, the first is fantastic new song plucked from rhythmic shores of South Africa. ‘Don’t Go’ is a beautiful and deep afrocentric song from Jo-burg star DJ Qness featuring the soothing tones of Xoli M. Two class mixes come from NYC’s Quentin Harris who delivers his signature soulful heat, pinned together by a massively infectious synth bass hook; and a menacing dub, toying with the vocal to a haunting soundtrack of punchy synth stabs and tech-beats. Next up is a gorgeous song from young North London producer SMI, featuring the unmistakable voice of Croydon’s Shea Soul, titled ‘Just Fine’. Mixes come from New Jersey’s Jihad Muhammad, adding in some fancy key work and lush sweeping strings; and San Fran’s David Harness works up a hypnotic groove for the floor.

Matt Langrish-Smith, London’s boy-about-town whose quick bio includes 3 years in Advertising at DMC and 5 years as Head of Events at Papa Records, taking their monthly party ‘Messages’ to the next level. In 2009 he collaborated with Dean Zepherin to set up the internationally acclaim Tribe Records UK (label and events company) with club residencies in Paris, Miami and London. Fast Forward to 2012 and Matt decided to spread his wings and launched a new events company ‘Makin’ Moves’ and joined forces with local London DJ talent, Jamesey. Along with hosting his own radio show on Housefm.net since 2004, Jamesey has been an essential cog in the wheel of London’s soulful & deep house scene, performing at parties including BBE, Soulogic, to name a few. He has also played gigs around the world in Dubai, Russia, Sardinia, Barcelona, and NYC, among others. Jamesey first met Matt whilst at one of his residency parties at Offthemeters.com. This chance meeting of minds marked the beginning of a flourishing new collaboration. In early 2009 they put on their first joint party, ‘Messages’ in London, which was a roaring success. After some years working on other projects the pair have come together once again. Matt & Jamesey both felt there was a gap in the London soulful/deep house scene for some good New York style underground house and also in response to the advent of Tracktor and laptop dj’s, a much needed sacred space to encourage and showcase creative DJ mixing once more. The first event was held at Brixton Clubhouse in July 2012, with DJ’s N’Dinga Gaba (Baltimore) and At One (Atjazz Record Co.) amongst others and was an instant success! Makin’ Moves launched  their new residency at Bedroom Bar (upstairs in the Loft), London, this October. They will be using their events ongoing to showcase all their fantastic artists, including Shea Soul who will be performing a live PA on Friday 9th November.

“Makin’ Moves isn’t just any old record label and events company. We’re looking to do a lot of unique events this year including all day terrace parties, a monthly club residency party and exciting co-promoted events, both here and abroad. We’re looking to use our events to build and expose a fantastic repertoire of new artists on the label.” – Matt L-S

DJ QNESS feat. XOLI M ‘Don’t Go’

Hot off the heels of their debut release from SMI feat Shea Soul with ‘Just Fine’, Makin’ Moves continue their house-work with a fantastic new single plucked from rhythmic shores of South Africa. ‘Don’t Go’ is a beautiful and deep afrocentric song from Jo-burg producer star DJ Qness and features the soothingly soulful tones of Xoli M. Two top class remixes come from NYC’s Quentin Harris who delivers his signature soulful heat, pinned together by a massively infectious synth bass hook. He then pulls out all the stops and arrives full armed with a menacing dub mix, cleverly toying with the vocal to a haunting soundtrack of punchy synth stabs and innovative tech-beats, ripe for the small hours!

Hailing from the dance-cultured streets of Johannesburg in South Africa, Qness first entered the musical scene as an RnB singer in a boy band at school. He moved on to hip hop in upper grade where he was also produced a high school band with friends, before being catapulted into dance music. Qness began to experiment with dance music at home, while analysing the scene, which at the time was mostly dominated by international renowned DJ’s and producers such as Louie Vega, Nick Holder, Masters at Work and many other House greats. With his PC at home and a healthy party scene to explore in both Johannesburg and Pretoria, he began his musical journey. By 2008, Qness had already acquainted himself with some of South Africa’s most influential DJs and producers and industry players . His first single ‘Fugama Unamathe’ featured some indigenous African vocals and percussion and the amazing vocalist Oluhle. It went on to become a critically acclaimed crossover dance hit in South Africa and beyond when Belgian based Boddhi Satva signed it to his Offering Records label. Qness has already remixed work for greats such as M.I.A with ‘XXXO’, along with hip hop mogul Jay Z, as well as Kele from Bloc Party, among others. The success of ‘Fugama Unamathe’ in South Africa was immediately followed up by his single ‘Uzongilinda’ featuring Malehloka (SoWHAT Records) which then lead on to his debut album ‘DJ Qness – On Cue Vol.1′. The album spawned singles including ‘Time’, ‘Believing’ (originally a collaboration by UPZ and Kafele) and ‘Bambelela’. Qness is also South Africa’s very first celebrity, face of, spokesperson and brand ambassador for the fashionable and very stylish Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, manufactured by the super power, Monster Cable Company.

Singer/songwriter Xoli M was born in KZN and grew up in Pretoria, Soshanguve. She Started her journey of in music in 2010 when she recorded her first hit track ‘Set Me Free’ alongside Blackmotion and recently signed wth Strongroots Entertainment. Ixoli has worked with a host of talented music extraodinares and producers including DjQness, Mckenzie (Rhythmic elements), SirJavas, Afrikaroots , DjSylivi and DjMalvado.

In the hermetically sealed world of dance music, where genres split tangentially with regular and bewildering regularity, there are a few whose music is expansive enough to cross barriers, ignore micro-idioms and appeal to many. Of course, there are a few exceptions to the rule and one such exception is DJ/Producer/Remixer, Quentin Harris. Quentin has remixed a plethora of stars from Justin Timberlake and Mariah Carey to Femi Kuti to Toni Braxton to Rihanna. In addition to ‘Don’t You Forget About Us’ from Mariah and ‘Not Like Crazy’ by Jill Scott, one of his benchmark rubs was a sneaky re-production of Leela James’ ‘My Joy’ transforming her dynamite blues jam into classic deep house. Aside of his massive singles including ‘Let’s Be Young’, ‘Give It 2 U’ with Ultra Nate and ‘Poor People’ with Monique Bingham, Quentin has penned 2 fantastic albums ‘No Politics’ and ‘Sac•ri•five’. He continues to rock the dance floors of the world with his unique energy and divine sounds.

DJ Qness

From the very first single that Qness released, to his very first live set, he proved beyond reasonable doubt, to be a an icon-in-the-making DJ and Musical Producer. His debut single titled “Fugama Unamathe” earmarked him as not just a producer, but a true musician and has been referred to many a time as one of the reputable Dee jays that have the “winning formula”. Hailing from the dance-cultured streets of Johannesburg in South Africa with just his “music”, his “mind” and “God-given talent”, Qness first entered the musical scene as an R ‘n’ B singer in a boy band at school, before he moved
on to do hip hop in upper grade with some high school friends, where he was also the producer for the band, until he finally got catapulted into dance music when he first heard the Oskido’s Church Grooves First Commandment.

This was the time when he started to experiment with dance music, particularly House, quietly at home, while analysing the scene which at the time was mostly dominated by international renowned DJ’s and producers such as Louie Vega, Nick Holder, Masters at Work and many other House greats. With his PC at home, a music-making programme, and a small portable electronic keyboard, he began the musical journey that was to take charge of his whole life and take him to subways he had never ever dreamt of before. While studying Information Technology and Computer Programming in the city of Johannesburg, he juggled between his books and music…

Meanwhile, he had started going to clubs and getting acquainted to the party scene around Johannesburg and Pretoria. The loud speakers at the clubs and the sight of one man behind a set of decks taking charge of the crowd just fascinated him and that’s when he truly realized how deep his love for music had developed, and he fell in love…he fell in love with the decks. Come 2005 and the dance scene in South Africa just blew up! Producers sprang from everywhere, penetrating the clubs, radio stations, taxi ranks and many other mediums and Qness could only celebrate the music. He had started working seriously on some projects and looked up to and idolized guys like DJ Mbuso (whom he still credits as having been instrumental in helping facilitate his first break into the scene), Black Coffee, Oskido (who is still and always will be a key role model in his career), Christos, and Vinny Da Vinci , while internationally he has looked up to David Guetta, Tiesto, Dennis Ferrer, Boddhi Satva, Manoo, Osunlade, Kerri Chandler, Frank Roger, Avi Elman (who has mentored him in so many ways) and many others too many to mention.
By 2008, Qness had already acquainted himself with some of South Africa’s most influential DJs and producers, and he had received a lot of guidance from industry influential people such as Ricardo Da Costa of Soul Candi Records, DJ Mbuso himself, as well as Euphonik whom they were peers at the time. His first break came through when he did his single Fugama Unamathe, which featured some indigenous African vocals and lots of congas and Afro-beat influenced percussions. The song featured the amazing UK-based vocalist Oluhle and went on to become a critically acclaimed crossover dance hit not only in South Africa, but abroad as well. Small UK stations began pumping the song and other countries like the USA, Australia, and Canada followed and before he knew it, he had an international hit on his hands and the single went on to spark the interest of Belgian based Boddhi Satva, who then signed it to his label Offering Records which went on to release the single internationally, along with a very strong remix package.
Qness has proved his ability to please a wide crossover market with his productions, having already worked with and done amazing remix work for renowned worldwide greats such as Britian’s M.I.A whom he worked with on the single XXXO, along with hip hop mogul Jay Z, as well as Kele from Bloc Party, whom he has done two successful remixes for already, inclusively Qness has also done other remix and production work for labels such as XL Recordings whom Adele is signed to, as well as Beacause Music in France. The success of his timeless dance classic of 2008/2009 “Fugama Unamathe” in South Africa was immediately followed up by his single “Uzongilinda” which also features a talented vocalist who goes by the name of Malehloka, whom Qness was very instrumental in unearthing and introducing to the dance music market not only in South Africa, but the world. Therefore Qness firmly believes that he does not make songs, but makes music, which can be listened to and appreciated by all people of all walks of life which is why he has bee able to break into the international market at such grassroots levels and at the very inception of his career.

He has in the short span of his career so far made two internationally acclaimed worldwide hits namely “Fugama Unamathe” (released for the world through Offering Records, Belgium in 2009) and “Uzongilinda” (released for the world through soWHAT Records, Tel Aviv Israel 2009), both of which became huge successes on the digital download market proclaiming him as one of South Africa’s most internationally recognized talents. Both singles were featured on his debut album titled “DJ Qness – On Cue Vol.1” on which he collaborated with a number of vocalists and other musicians. The “Uzongilinda” single sees Qness collaborate with some world recognized legends on the dance market such as Abicah Soul, UPZ (Avi Elman) of the “Pure Surprise” fame as well as UK talent Euan Mitchell, Rancido, and local greats Infinite Boyz, Sbonza and Mindlo. He has built himself into a somewhat undisputable local talented force to deal with and continues to make “good music” as he puts it.

He also released a repackage of his debut album and aptly named it “On Cue Reloaded” after the success of “On Cue Vol. 1” and the repackage brought along plug singles such as “Time” which became an instant hit and national anthem, debuting on charts within days of release and was abruptly followed by his immensely irresistible remix of “Believing” (originally a collaboration by UPZ and Kafele), making it his fifth number one single on the South African charts after “Fugama Unamathe”, “Uzongilinda”. “Time” and the distinct “Bambelela”. On the business side he recently clinched a very reputable deal as South Africa’s very first celebrity, face of, spokesperson and brand ambassador for the fashionable and very stylish Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, manufactured by the super power, Monster Cable Company. He becomes the very first South African celebrity to attach his name to the legendary Dr. Dre. Armed with talent, charisma, mogul-like busniess acumen and and a lot of passion Qness has proved himself beyond reasonable doubt and has shown that he is the epitome not only of music, but business fashion and style. He is certainly not about to stop, as he continues in his quest to make “music”, and not “songs” as he puts it, and he is certainly on his way to becoming a true ambassador of African dance music.

Shea Soul

Shea Soul is the exciting new future-soul-jazz singer from Croydon, UK. The Brit School graduate has gained a reputation within the scene with her distinctive voice and ability to pen strong hooks and melodies. A chance hook-up led to her being asked to vocal a track with legendary dance producer Matt ‘MJ’ Cole. Her first official foray into songwriting resulted in the dance floor smash, ‘Never Say Never’. Now firmly established on the UK underground, Shea Soul was well and truly in demand as a songwriter and featured artist, working with a slew of the UK’s most credible underground producers, from Toddla T, Joey Negro, Shy FX, Donaeo, Swindle, Phil Asher, Zed Bias and Simbad. A session with Attacca Pesante spawned the biggest underground hit: ‘Make it Funky’, written and performed by Shea, became one of the founding hits of the UK Funky scene. Her track ‘Perfectly’ with The Layabouts was also a huge club smash. As well as top line writing for dance producers, Shea is currently working on her debut solo album which is due for release next year. Her debut solo single ‘Where Did You Go’ is a uniquely British sounding slice of jazz-infused street-soul -the perfect tease for her album.
