In the 60’s Antiono Carlos Jobin and Vinius de Moraes created the Brasilian gem “Girl From Ipanema.” Sweet and breezy, the bossa-nova tune was catapulted into immortality by Stan Getz and a very young Astrud Gilberto, turning the track into a Grammy-winning modern standard, heard in café’s and commercials and inspiring folks to make the pilgrimage to the canonized Brasilian beach.

Fast-forward to 2013 and renowned Dominican dance scientist Ezel has taken to re-imagining the standard. Ezel took a break from working as a DJ, producer and songwriter to re-connect with his formal musical studies. After a year in Spain studying, he found himself with newly developed senses and inspired to challenge himself. Ezel gravitated towards one particular standard he encountered in training, “Girl From Ipanema.”

Ezel’s version updates the classic, straying from the traditional notion of what dance and jazz can be. Through a deceitfully simple arrangement, Ezel infuses his rhythm with a jazz sensibility, adding a bit of a twist to the timelessness of the original. Tamara Wellons adds strong, sweet vocals to complete the circle. The single is bolstered by two remixes. Justin Imperiale takes it to the club for his DUBstrumental rendition, putting the song in a stronger dance context while still keeping key melodic and harmonic elements present. Trinidadian Deep Future Vision mix completely strips the song down and rebuilds it with a bugged-out, astral perspective.

“Girl From Ipanema” showcases Ezel’s experimentation and growth. You can practically feel the breeze blowing from the opening notes. This is just the beginning, be on the lookout for more innovation and surprise from Ezel and Makin’ Moves.

Exclusive promos will be available via www.traxsource.com from 15th July. Full release 12th August.

DJ QNESS feat. XOLI M ‘Don’t Go’

Hot off the heels of their debut release from SMI feat Shea Soul with ‘Just Fine’, Makin’ Moves continue their house-work with a fantastic new single plucked from rhythmic shores of South Africa. ‘Don’t Go’ is a beautiful and deep afrocentric song from Jo-burg producer star DJ Qness and features the soothingly soulful tones of Xoli M. Two top class remixes come from NYC’s Quentin Harris who delivers his signature soulful heat, pinned together by a massively infectious synth bass hook. He then pulls out all the stops and arrives full armed with a menacing dub mix, cleverly toying with the vocal to a haunting soundtrack of punchy synth stabs and innovative tech-beats, ripe for the small hours!

Hailing from the dance-cultured streets of Johannesburg in South Africa, Qness first entered the musical scene as an RnB singer in a boy band at school. He moved on to hip hop in upper grade where he was also produced a high school band with friends, before being catapulted into dance music. Qness began to experiment with dance music at home, while analysing the scene, which at the time was mostly dominated by international renowned DJ’s and producers such as Louie Vega, Nick Holder, Masters at Work and many other House greats. With his PC at home and a healthy party scene to explore in both Johannesburg and Pretoria, he began his musical journey. By 2008, Qness had already acquainted himself with some of South Africa’s most influential DJs and producers and industry players . His first single ‘Fugama Unamathe’ featured some indigenous African vocals and percussion and the amazing vocalist Oluhle. It went on to become a critically acclaimed crossover dance hit in South Africa and beyond when Belgian based Boddhi Satva signed it to his Offering Records label. Qness has already remixed work for greats such as M.I.A with ‘XXXO’, along with hip hop mogul Jay Z, as well as Kele from Bloc Party, among others. The success of ‘Fugama Unamathe’ in South Africa was immediately followed up by his single ‘Uzongilinda’ featuring Malehloka (SoWHAT Records) which then lead on to his debut album ‘DJ Qness – On Cue Vol.1′. The album spawned singles including ‘Time’, ‘Believing’ (originally a collaboration by UPZ and Kafele) and ‘Bambelela’. Qness is also South Africa’s very first celebrity, face of, spokesperson and brand ambassador for the fashionable and very stylish Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, manufactured by the super power, Monster Cable Company.

Singer/songwriter Xoli M was born in KZN and grew up in Pretoria, Soshanguve. She Started her journey of in music in 2010 when she recorded her first hit track ‘Set Me Free’ alongside Blackmotion and recently signed wth Strongroots Entertainment. Ixoli has worked with a host of talented music extraodinares and producers including DjQness, Mckenzie (Rhythmic elements), SirJavas, Afrikaroots , DjSylivi and DjMalvado.

In the hermetically sealed world of dance music, where genres split tangentially with regular and bewildering regularity, there are a few whose music is expansive enough to cross barriers, ignore micro-idioms and appeal to many. Of course, there are a few exceptions to the rule and one such exception is DJ/Producer/Remixer, Quentin Harris. Quentin has remixed a plethora of stars from Justin Timberlake and Mariah Carey to Femi Kuti to Toni Braxton to Rihanna. In addition to ‘Don’t You Forget About Us’ from Mariah and ‘Not Like Crazy’ by Jill Scott, one of his benchmark rubs was a sneaky re-production of Leela James’ ‘My Joy’ transforming her dynamite blues jam into classic deep house. Aside of his massive singles including ‘Let’s Be Young’, ‘Give It 2 U’ with Ultra Nate and ‘Poor People’ with Monique Bingham, Quentin has penned 2 fantastic albums ‘No Politics’ and ‘Sac•ri•five’. He continues to rock the dance floors of the world with his unique energy and divine sounds.

Summer 2012 saw the birth of a brand new events promotion company in London, ‘Makin’ Moves’. With already a host of successful parties under their belt, head honcho Matt Langrish-Smith and wing-man Jamesey make the next move and launch their exciting new record label for the brand. The first single to rumble out of their studios is a gorgeous soulful outing from North London producer SMI featuring the unmistakable voice of  Shea Soul titled ‘Just Fine’. Shea’s heartfelt voice glides through the song like a hot knife to ice cream over SMI’s soundtrack of afrocentric beats and emotional melancholic piano. Also appearing on the release are San Francisco top dog DJ/producer, David Harness, who works up a hypnotic groove for the floor; and New Jersey soulful maestro, Jihad Muhammad, delivers a four to the floor ‘Bang The Drum Mix’ adding in some fancy key work and lush sweeping strings.

A relatively new kid on the block, Leon Vandol, aka SMI has his heart first and foremost in his music. Based in North London this young talent has already worked with Donaeo and G Frsh (signed to Tiny Tempah’s label), as well as developing some new fresh soulful talent himself. A big fan of Shea Soul, Leon approached her on Facebook and they went on to link in the studio to record their first collaboration ‘Just Fine’.

Shea Soul is the exciting new future-soul-jazz singer from Croydon, UK. The Brit School graduate has gained a reputation within the scene with her distinctive voice and ability to pen strong hooks and melodies. A chance hook-up led to her being asked to vocal a track with legendary dance producer Matt ‘MJ’ Cole. Her first official foray into songwriting resulted in the dance floor smash, ‘Never Say Never’. Now firmly established on the UK underground, Shea Soul was well and truly in demand as a songwriter and featured artist, working with a slew of the UK’s most credible underground producers, from Toddla T, Joey Negro, Shy FX, Donaeo, Swindle, Phil Asher, Zed Bias and Simbad. A session with Attacca Pesante spawned the biggest underground hit:  ’Make it Funky’, written and performed by Shea, became one of the founding hits of the UK Funky scene. Her track ‘Perfectly’ with The Layabouts was also a huge club smash. As well as top line writing for dance producers, Shea is currently working on her debut solo album which is due for release in 2013. Her debut solo single ‘Where Did You Go’ is a uniquely British sounding slice of jazz-infused street-soul -the perfect tease for her album.

“Makin’ Moves isn’t just any old record label and events company. We’re looking to do a lot of unique events this year including all day terrace parties, a monthly club residency party and exciting co-promoted events, both here and abroad. We’re looking to use our events to build and expose a fantastic repertoire of new artists on the label.” - Matt L-S
