We welcome Phil Hooton from Leeds to our artist roster with an exciting new release ‘Zanzibar’ that he’s been championing for a few years now in his dj sets and has become somewhat of an underground anthem whenever he’s dropped it.
Since we picked it up this special track has been in heavy rotation in our sets at Makin’ Moves and it always grabs attention whenever it’s been played.
The release comes with three mixes, Main Mix, Dub and Spoken Drum Mix. The Main Mix takes us on a journey to Zanibar in Africa with deep drums and haunting organ stabs that give us a feel that we are there alongside the lion and tigers, particularly when the lion roars! The Dub also works equally well, with a hint of the classic ‘Plastic Dreams’ about it.
Phil didn’t grow up in a Southside church or cut his teeth at a Deep South Baptist revival, but to hear Phil Hooton’s music, you could certainly think so. From the UK, Phil Hooton gospel-tinged compositions and DJ sets have earned him the acclaim of Deep House pioneers from Glenn Underground and Kerri Chandler to Farley Jackmaster Funk, as well as Chicago’s Nu Bang Clan, which just inducted him as a member. Together with Phil Asher, Mr. Hooton has to be considered on anyone’s shortlist of the hottest UK producers on the scene today.
